Top 4 Things to Do at Wind River Reservation
Just a little under three hours east of Grand Teton National Park, you can stay at Wind River Hotel & Casino, a well-appointed hotel on the Wind River Reservation. Run by the Northern Arapaho tribe, the hotel offers a unique cultural experience you won’t find staying at national chain hotels in the area. And if you want to roll the dice, it’s the biggest gaming destination in Wyoming. Here are five attractions in the hotel or just a short drive away.
- Northern Arapaho Experience
Why: Discover why the red willow played such an important role in Northern Arapaho lives and how different parts of a buffalo were used for everything from water carriers to sleds. Located right off the Wind River Hotel & Casino lobby, the Northern Arapaho Experience Room contains artifacts that provide insight into Northern Arapaho culture, both past and present. Amid intricately beaded baby cradles, you’ll find some contemporary pieces like Native American Barbies, a very long list of Northern Arapaho veterans and a replica teepee.
Find it: Off the lobby of the Wind River Hotel & Casino.
- St. Stephens Indian Mission Catholic Church
Why: A 5-minute drive from the hotel, you’ll discover St. Stephens Indian Mission Catholic Church. Adorned with Northern Arapaho artwork on the outside and inside, this may be one of the most stunning churches you’ll ever see- not because it mimics European churches but because it doesn’t. You find its understated beauty in the way Northern Arapaho culture is interwoven into every aspect of traditional Catholic iconography. The lectern is carved into an American eagle. On the altar, the poles of a teepee grow out of a wooden cross bearing a crucified Jesus. We’ll stop there. You’ll have to visit to discover the rest.
Find it: 33 St. Stephens Rd. Stephens, Wyo.
- Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary
Why: Here’s your chance to see wild horses up-close — don’t miss it. Head to the Oldham family’s Double D Ranch, a working cattle ranch, where 230 wild horses roam. You’ll ride on an open-air vehicle to the horses and learn about the role they’ve played in Native American cultures and in the West. Dwayne Oldham has family roots that go back to the 1800s in the area, and his wife Denise Oldham is a Navajo. Three of their four kids help run the ranch and sanctuary, plus the incredible visitor center. At the visitor center, you can read exhibit panels on the history of horses in North America and how they shaped Native American cultures. The visitor center is free. Wild horse tours are $35 per adult, $15 for kids ages 13-18 and free for kids 12 and under.
Find it: Just 30 miles from the hotel, it’s located at 8168 US 287 north of Lander in the Wind River Reservation.
- Circle the Continental Divide Scenic Drive
Why: Take one of the most breathtaking scenic drives to or from Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks via the hotel. Cutting through the Wind River Reservation, the Circle the Continental Divide Loop has been rated a “Best of the Road” trip by Rand-McNally Road Map Co. This stunning route takes you through two national parks, the 2,500-feet-deep Wind River Canyon, deep into Oregon Trail history, past bighorn sheep in Dubois, the Gold-Rush towns of South Pass City and Atlantic City and more.
Find it: Start in Riverton and then start the loop by taking Hwy. 789 to Lander and then head to Atlantic City. More Details
